Be still. Two words I heard a lot growing up. In the little kid world of Brittany, I was always on the go.
Adult me has changed so much, but I look back and miss the curiosity, having no other reason than to believe there’s so much beauty in this world. The daydreaming ideas that if I jumped I could touch the clouds and pull them back down to earth. When climbing a tree took me to the heights of the world and the view spanned countries, not blocks: the joy, the laughter, the freedom of each new adventure.
My once “day dreamer” heart grew into a mind of why’s and what-if’s.
Instead, my heart and mind all too easily became intertwined with worry.
On my commute, I was trying to think through every possible scenario of a certain situation. These two words instantly calmed my heart: Be still.
God calls us to, “be still and know that He is God.” These two well known words come from Psalm 46.
How those words put us back in our place, but the whole chapter sets the comforting and humbling tone for the command of stillness.
Read through it! Read it out loud. Take in each reminder of His magnificent strength.
God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea, though its waters roar and foam and the mountains quake with their surging. There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, the holy place where the Most High dwells. God is within her, she will not fall; God will help her at break of day. Nations are in uproar, kingdoms fall; he lifts his voice, the earth melts. The Lord Almighty is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress. Come and see what the Lord has done, the desolations he has brought on the earth. He makes wars cease to the ends of the earth. He breaks the bow and shatters the spear; he burns the shields with fire. He says, “Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.” The Lord Almighty is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress.
Psalm 46:1-11
He is with us! How can I not be still in the presence of the creator of the mountains, who knows every wave of the foaming sea.
Maybe you feel like the daydreaming child and if so, please don’t let the world dim your shine, or maybe you feel caught up in the crashing sea of life. Wherever you are, take comfort in this truth: you are safe to be still in the arms of the One whose voice melts the earth. May His love wash over you today.
